Key Concepts

Before diving into credit repair, it helps to understand some fundamental concepts. This guide covers the essentials you need to know.

What is Credit Repair?

Credit repair is the process of identifying and disputing inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information on your credit reports. Under federal law, credit bureaus must investigate disputes and remove items they cannot verify.

"This isn't about removing legitimate debts—it's about ensuring your credit report accurately reflects your credit history. Studies show that 1 in 5 consumers have an error on their credit report."

The Dispute Process

The dispute process follows a standard workflow:

1

Identify

Review your credit report for errors, inaccuracies, or unverifiable information.

2

Document

Gather any supporting evidence for your dispute.

3

Dispute

Send a formal dispute letter to the credit bureau(s) reporting the error.

4

Wait

Bureaus have 30 days to investigate and respond.

5

Review

Check the results and re-dispute if necessary.

Understanding Rounds

Credit repair is typically done in "rounds." Each round represents a cycle of disputes sent to the bureaus.

Round 1

Your initial disputes, typically targeting the most obvious factual errors or requesting verification.

Round 2+

Follow-up disputes for items that weren't resolved, using different strategies like "Method of Verification" or "Escalation".

The Three Bureaus

There are three major credit bureaus in the United States. Each maintains its own separate file on you.

Experian
Equifax
TransUnion

An error might appear on one bureau but not others. That's why it's important to check—and dispute with—all three bureaus.

Your Legal Rights

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you important rights:

  • The right to dispute inaccurate information
  • Bureaus must investigate within 30 days
  • Unverifiable information must be removed
  • You must be notified of the investigation results
